While wearing their gear, using their product in the pits or having the decals in clear visible spots is how showing appreciation is normally done, there are far better ways to spread the word for these companies that keep you racing.

Every year it's the same old story that I hear from so many companies that have sponsor programs. "We sponsor these riders and give them our request (ranging from calling in with updates or mailing in updates) but very seldom do we ever hear anything back once they've gotten what they want. This just gives them an idea on what to expect from you for next year and potentially drop you from their radar or put your new updated resume in the round file that sits next to the desk. Keeping your end of the bargain is much more than running whatever product they give you or putting a sticker on your quad. I've seen so many people at the races that talk as if the people that give them their product for sponsorship should be honored to be a part of their program for that 10th or 11th place finish out of an 11 rider field. Remember when you send the letter to them? It certainly wasn't them hunting you down from across the country.

One rider that I feel is a great example for people to follow is our new 2012 ATV MX Champion Chad Wienen. While I don't know him on a great personal level, i've spoken with him quite a few times over the phone or at the track and have always felt that he was a good kid. After recovering from an unfortunate injury last year that would have had many others hang up their helmet, he recovered and trained hard because he had a fire inside of him that wanted the championship. Late in the game he was able to gather a group of sponsors that would help him throughout the year and in return he showed his appreciation. Of course he would give them their props on the podium, but more so he would take to social media channels like Twitter ( www.twitter.com/wienen44 ) or Facebook and thank all of his sponsors for their help. Not only would he be doing this after his wins, but he would do it after random practice sessions at his home track, or if he got some new graphics or situations like that. This is the top pro in the country that is stepping up and showing how much all of the support means to him and is helping him achieve his goal. There are even some Pro racers that are out there racing because they just have a good time and are getting backed in huge way by their sponsors because they represent well and really support their product.

Many amateur and even other top level Pro's should take a lesson from Chad. If you're an amateur, it takes all of the support to help keep your budgets down and build a worthy race machine that can keep you competitive. Make sure that you keep that bike looking good and that you are physically fit to make their products look good on the track as well. If you want to get to the top, you need all of the help you can get, unless you can fully support yourself.

For all of you Pro's, you need to remember the people that helped and continue to help you stay on your A game. Just because you're in the top 5 every weekend doesn't mean that you can't give your sponsors a call and say thanks every once and a while to show how much you appreciate their efforts. I'm not saying that every one of you out there is like this because I know plenty that properly represent their support, but i've never seen one go above and beyond like Chad and I think it was good for people to see.

Anyways, that was my 2 cents for the day and hopefully it makes you think about what people will and should expect out of you when you start sending out your letters asking for 2013 support. You never know... if you step up your game, they may step up your program for next year.

Representing Your Sponsors |

I was once told the characteristics that irritate you the most are often the ones you possess so greatly. And if you are laughing, give this column to the guy it reminds you of the most, have them write me a letter. Then laugh some more.

And it goes like this: If you are such a good dirt bike rider, then how come you don't race? The racetrack or other competitive events are the places for you to show everyone your skills. Here, they will be watching, taking lap times, keeping score and tabulating points-a perfect venue for you to show off what you do. You shouldn't be racing on a trail ride, roosting past campsites, revving around hikers or popping wheelies through people's neighborhoods or along the side of the road to show off. If you do this stuff, you are a Richard Cranium.

Just stop and ask anyone who isn't on a motorcycle-and even a lot of people who are (if they will tell you the truth)-if you're not convinced. And along with the crown of idiocy you are wearing while racing hell-bent for nothing, you are dragging the image of dirt bike riders in general down the drain with you. It's amazing how tough it is to beat this logic into the head of a 12-year-old or anyone who acts that age, but whatever.

So you like racing on the trails? Well, here's why you shouldn't do that, even if no one can see you, hear you or knows you are there. Racing beats the crap out of trails. Go race and see most of the crap areas you get to do this on. There is no way to avoid them getting rutted, whooped, rerouted, bogged, chopped and generally torn up from all the wheel spinning, roosting, skidding and passing. There is nothing wrong with all of this stuff in the right place. You know, where they have races. But don't wreck nice trails for people who don't want to race trails. If you like to race on the trails, do it at a race. If you're still not getting it, please spend a day working on trail maintenance; you know, to pay your trail race fee back in some way. A day of cutting downed trees, moving rocks, creating water bars (that you likely spun your wheel right through last week!), trimming brush or even blocking off the shortcuts that you used to take (because you are such a good rider) will have you thinking a second time about your actions on the ground.

If you are such a good rider, why is your bike so loud? Do you need it to be faster? Because if you are so superior, you should be able to whip everybody's butt on a bike with less power, right? And that is what quiet bikes are, right? Slow and weak? Well, you're wrong again. Most quiet bikes can actually produce more power on the top-end. And since I know you have your throttle pegged all the time this is good for you. But what about regular guys, you ask? Hey, even with a quiet bike they can just turn the throttle farther if they need more power, you know. Maybe lead by example?

Since you are so fast at the track, was that slow guy really so hard for you to pass that he deserved to be stuffed? I mean, with all your advanced skill (Intermediate is almost like Pro and all) you certainly could have snuck by him. I know you don't move up a class because of all your sponsors, but that guy you just punted over the berm might have looked up to you at some time-but not anymore. And he may not buy stuff from your sponsor's shop or maybe he'll even drop some of your sponsors an e-mail about your character, not your speed.

One time you're going to do that to the wrong guy who actually knows what a block pass and getting stuffed are-big difference. I learned from a couple of guys named Gary Jones and Rex Staten when I was a fast young guy and I didn't know (or care at the time) who they were. I now pass that lesson along in more ways than just writing about it-for the kids, of course.

And the best one, and this is really the pot calling the kettle black here, is that *** really good rider who, like some guy known for "Squid Filters," has taken groups of lesser riders on rides that just plain punishes them. I used to do it right off the bat to trim the fat before the real ego crushing started. But the difference between me and a lot of other guys who do this is I take the reputation we achieve with these death marches seriously along with the responsibility of the broken bodies it could create, the destroyed bikes it makes and the destruction to trails less skilled riders tend to do when they get in over their head. I'm also prepared for what the contestants in the non-contest now think of me. Make sure you are, too.

I've done all of the above at some time in my riding and racing career; lately I've been working on my penance. If you are such a good rider, then you need to know that your actions speak volumes about the rider you really are, not just the speed, noise and destruction you leave in your wake.

If You Are Such A Good Rider... |

Good friends, good racing and a reason to get out of the house. Dan Guetter of Quadfreestyle.com called to let me know that he had a couple of extra tickets for the opening round of Supercross in Anaheim, CA (A1) and wanted to know if my best friend and I wanted to join him and his friends. Opening round of SX? I'm all over it!

After meeting up with Dan and his wife at the gates to the stadium we were given our tickets and made the trek to the top of the stadium. Dan apologized because of the location of our seats and hoped his "hook-up" might have been a bit closer to the track. In the words of my friend Jim, "our seats are two rows above the Goodyear blimp." After years of attending the SX races at Anaheim, i've come to the conclusion that the only undesirable seats are at the field level, and for free i'm not going to complain at all.

Once we were all settled in and the races kicked off, we were witness to some great bar banging action. The Lites class leaders seemed to pull away pretty quick but the action taking place mid-pack was the best of both heat races. I even spotted some awesome looking gear on some of the riders that I really want to get now. The Troy Lee Designs Steve McQueen Edition gear and helmet are very sharp as are most of the items that come from that company. The 450 qualifiers had good action as all eyes were on Ryan Dungey who is a rookie in the class this year, and he definitely did not disappoint.

In years past after the qualifiers were done, KTM used to have the KTM 65 Challenge, where local kids would enter a drawing and be selected to ride identical bikes on the same track as their heroes for 3 laps in front of a packed stadium. For whatever reason, i'm assuming financial costs, they no longer do this and it leaves a great amount of dead time after the LCQ's have been run. While there was a 5 minute freestyle show (wooooo..... scarcastic enthusiasm) and a very cheezy publicity game for Toyota, many of the fans looked uninterested including me. This made for plenty of time to catch up with Dan and what is going on in his life. He informed me of the freestyle tour that his brother has been performing in called Nuclear Cowboyz. Not long after he mentioned it to me, there was a video on the bigscreen announcing upcoming tour dates.

All of the biggest names in Freestyle MX seem to be a part of the show and picking Derek Guetter to represent the ATV fanatics on his Can-Am DS 450 is a nice addition. It wasn't long ago that I caught Dan landing his first backflip to dirt on YouTube and seeing how excited he was. Derek is doing them on a regular basis in this show, and according to Dan the fans are loving it. There are going to be 3 stops in the Southern California are and i'm going to make it to at least one of those so we can get some great pictures for our website.

In the SX Lites class the racing was good as Monster Energy Kawasaki team rider Jake Weimer led the race from start to finish followed by Trey Canard and Ryan Morais. The elite SX class was definitely a bigger story with even more fierce action than the qualifiers and Lites classes put together. The rookie Ryan Dungey grabbed the holeshot followed by last years champion James Stewart while Chad Reed, Stewarts biggest competition from last year, settled for a mid-front pack start. After crossing the finish line jump on the first lap, Reed pulled into the pits and handed his bike to his mechanic as he started to make his way to the pits. He fell victim to a crowded corner where his front wheel spokes met the foot peg of a fellow rider ending his night.

Out in front Dungey continued to lead Stewart up until the last 4 laps of the race when Stewart made his move for the lead resulting in the entire stadium rising to their feet in excitement. As everyone assumed that the race was done, Dungey came back with a valiant effort to take the lead back unsuccessfully and settling for a 2nd place finish. Surprisingly Kevin Windham, a veteran on the track, worked his way up for the final podium spot. This was some of the best racing i've seen in SX for quite some time and i'm looking forward to more in the future. I'm also looking forward to the Nuclear Cowboyz tour to come into town so I can see what all of the hype is about.

Thanks Dan!!

A Night At The Races |

To represent ATV Rider Magazine, I attended the event where all of the companies employees were given a break from work and had a chance to show their appreciation to the professional riders that helped put their company at the top.

The riders in attendance were 2008 and 2009 ATV Motocross Champion Dustin Wimmer, 7 time AMA Superbike Champion Matt Mladin who earlier in the year announced his retirement from racing, '09 450 Motocross Champion Chad Reed, '09 SX Lites and 250 Motocross Champion Ryan Dungey and finally the '09 WERA Endurance Championship team of Vesrah Suzuki Endurance Racing who had riders Trey Batey and Mark Junge on hand.

For the ATV race program this year, the #1 plate was well deserved by Dustin Wimmer as Rod Lopusnak explained to everyone in attendance how Wimmer broke his shoulder earlier in the year and was expected to sit out the remainder of the season and watch his early point lead disappear. In Rod's words, "Dustin went to doctor after doctor that told him his race season was finished until he found one that said we could screw your shoulder back together." This determination is what won Dustin his second consecutive MX championship and the second for Suzuki.

Each rider was given a special plaque in recognition for their hard work over the season by the President of ASMC. Superbike Champion Matt Mladin was also given a special framed picture that was surrounded by signatures and well wishes by many Suzuki employees in appreciation of his many years and hard work over the years racing out of their semis.
After the presentation was over, a lunch provided by Chronic Tacos courtesy of team sponsor Rockstar Energy Drinks was served and followed by an autograph session for all to have memorabilia signed as well as posters and special pennants made just for this occasion.

Seeing a company like Suzuki put on an event like this accomplished two things that I thought were great. The first was to let the employees of the company meet the riders that help keep the company at the top of their respected sports, and secondly the riders get a chance to interact with the people that handle the day-to-day tasks of the company that lets them do what they love. Everything was appreciated on both sides and i'm sure that they're ready to do it all over again next year, or at least they're hoping for it.

*note: At this time Chris Borich, who also rides a Suzuki LT 450R is currently leading the points in the GNCC ATV series and could potentially add a sixth championship to their list for the year.

Suzuki employees celebrate the winning of 5 championships this year |

Once this project is finished, I'll be moving on to another. I can't really think of anything.

The ROX anti-vibe risers are really good looking pieces and went on with no problems as did the FLEXX bars. For the grips I opted to run the Pro Taper Pillow Top grips because I have used these in the past and found that they are the most comfortable grips ever and give me minimal if any blisters after a hard afternoon of riding. Since I was adding so much height with the new risers and bars, I was a little concerned with the cables and brake lines being too short, but again had no problems. They are at their limits, but not to the point of causing any problems in the future.

One thing I did discover in doing this was that the Pro Armor kill switch that was installed by Yamaha originally has a large housing that allows it to fit perfectly on the oversized crosstube of the handlebars and comes with an insert if you choose to run them on standard sizes as well. Talk about a much welcome feature on such a basic item.

Also to clean up the appearance of the controls, I chose to remove the emergency brake lever and cable. This was very simple to do as it only takes less than 5 minutes and makes the machine look much sportier once it's finished.

Finally one of the things I thought about the other day was how tacky the machine looked with my beadlock rear wheels and the stock black rims and tires up front. If I'm riding this at the motocross track, I want it to have the right setup as well. I went through my shed of old tires and wheels and came out with a set of slightly used ITP MXR fronts and a set of their T-9 Pro series wheels. Sure they had some scratches in them, but they weren't bent and would hold up great for anything I could put this machine through.

With everything installed, I stepped back and took in the sight of my completed project. No, it's not a National Championship winning machine, but it is a fun bike that I will enjoy for months and months to come. All of these parts only take a few hours to install as long as you dont have any interruptions and are well worth the time. Price wise, the most expensive items I had to order in were the bars and like I said are well worth the money. The wheels and tires came off of my old Banshee which sits tucked away in my garage ready for a rebuild itself.

Take a look at the pics and tell me what you think. If there is anything you think it could be missing or have done to your own personal machine to taylor it to your needs, let us know. I'm always excited to see new pics of our readers rides on our website and you never know if we might contact you about doign a story on your ride if it's got that just right look.

Thanks for reading.
-Eli

The Finishing Touches To Make This Quad Fit A Big Guy |

I’m a fairly calm and collected personality and will wait to determine whether a subject needs my attention or not. Well, I’ve allowed a certain subject to work its way deep into my head, and now I feel that it’s my duty to warn unsuspecting buyers about a growing epidemic in the ATV industry.

How often do you take a cruise in your car on a Saturday afternoon with your family and notice a pile of motorcycles, scooters, ATVs as well as some other unusual contraptions that you’ve never seen before on the corner of a gas station parking lot? In fact, it looks a lot like an off-road dealer has set up shop without a building. So you get out of the car to check them out and realize with amazement that these machines are priced at about half of what you would pay for them at your local dealer. For those who think “that seems a bit fishy to
me,” you’re on the right track! For the rest of you, please read this warning very carefully. As an editor who is very informed on ATVs and cares deeply about this sport and its enthusiasts, this is a steal! But the problem is that those who purchase them will be the ones taken, not the roadside dealer. These dealers purchase these machines overseas in bulk without any sort of license or warranty.

Reading through our forums on www.atvrideronline.com is what really got my helmet lining in a wad. We’ve had post after post after post by those who have bought an off-brand ATV, had nothing but trouble with it since the day of purchase and are begging for parts, solutions and help. New posts of this nature are added literally every single day. If you don’t believe me,
just go take a peek for yourself. I know it’s too late for many who have already made this type of purchase, but for the rest of you, please be careful buying these off-brand ATVs. They will more than likely cause you more trouble than if you were to just go ahead and pay a little more for a brand-name ATV. Yes, there are occasions and certain circumstances when people can come out on top with the purchase of an off-brand ATV, but I would bet that is a rare experience. Or at least I rarely hear of them.

The differences between an off-brand ATV and a name-brand ATV are important. I totally understand that many people are looking for a low-priced unit, but buying a quality ATV will more than likely save you money in the long run, or at least allow you to come out even with much less hassle. Off-brand ATV companies are cutting huge corners on these machines. Cheap materials are used to manufacture them in order to keep the costs minimal. How can you be sure that these manufacturers over in China properly torque the bolts? Remember, they are cutting corners to cut cost! The stories that we’ve read on the forums are downright scary as people have gotten home and started them with no oil in the motor. Clutches burn out in an hour, parts fall off on the first ride…the list goes on and on. If you end up buying one of these machines, you’re likely to be left with one huge hassle.

Personally, I’m frustrated with these careless dealers and manufacturers as I feel they are giving ATVs and ATV enthusiasts a bad rap. New buyers buy, then get frustrated and end up leaving the sport forever because they’ve been met at the starting gate by a slick car salesman who has ripped them from the joy of the sport. It’s up to you to do the research, but we would highly recommend going with manufacturers that have a good track record, develop quality products, stand behind warranties and have parts readily available when you are in need of them. Oh, and an R&D department would be a good sign as well. ATVR

Things You Should Know Before Purchasing An ATV:

• Quality and service count. If you purchase an ATVfrom a parking lot or a local hardware store, where will you find repair manuals and replacement parts? Make sure your purchase is warranted, you can contact the manufacturer and you’ll be able to purchase replacement parts.

• Safety counts. Name-brandATVmanufacturers spend millions of dollars on R&D, strict manufacturing guidelines and safety features on their products. You’ll want your youngsters to have brakes that work and properly fitted parts that won’t fall off after the first turn.

• Looks aren’t everything. Most all of the off-brandATVs on the market are a carbon copy of the popular name-brandATVs. But just because it may look like a Raptor does not make it a Raptor. That goes for handling, quality and safety.

I’m sure that this editorial has made a few angry, but my goal is to inform those who might be considering a futureA TV purchase. Over the past two months this quad has gotten plenty of use by both myself and Adam Campbell when we go out to the track on practice days. With my regular race machine being torn down for maintenance before next years race season starts, my new practice machine was ready for a little TLC itself.

The stock plastic was definitely showing some wear and tear, the filter needed maintenance and I wanted to setup the quad a little more to my liking. With this in mind I decided to make a few calls and get some parts on their way to me. Since the quad was already outfitted with a few GYTR parts, I chose to add to the list with a graphics kit, K&N style airfilter, outerwear, aluminum filter flange and jet kit complete with new needle. In the handling department I opted to order a set of my favorite FLEXX handlebars and mount them to the stock steering stem using the new Rox anti-vibe handle bar risers.

First on my agenda was to install the graphics kit. This kit consists of the front nose, tank panels, two front fenders and 4 rear fender pieces. Not that graphics kits are difficult to install but these went on very easily and give the macine a clean even sportier look. Now was time to gain a few more ponies by eliminating the foam filter and installing the high flow unit I ordered up. The GYTR complete exhaust system makes a good amount of power, but by installing a higher flowing air filter, leaving the air box lid off and rejetting the stock carburetor i'm sure that there is plenty of extra power to be had.

The I opted to install the aluminum flange in the airbox before anything because it seemed to be the easiest to quickly get out of the way. Not only does this flange allow you to run a K&N style filter in the stock airbox, but it also does away with the restrictive anti-backfire screen that sits behind the air filter. Simply remove 6 nuts, pull and toss in the trash. The new flange gets bolted right back into place with almost no hastle. With this done, the outerwear went onto the filter as the filter was clamped into place.

This next part ended up being a little more complicated than I had expected. Jetting of carburetors is nothing new to me since i've done it for years on my own machines as well as customers machines at my previous job. The vaccum slide carb that is used on this machine is tightly tucked in and takes a bit of effort to remove, but once you've had to do it once or twice it becomes easy. Now before I get into further detail, when I asked for these parts to ship from Yamaha I had requested to receive the appropriate jetting for the exhaust and air filter with the lid removed. What I received was a GYTR jet kit which came with 5 main jets that ranged from 130-140 size main jets, a 27.5 pilot and an adjustable needle.

I pulled the float bowl off of the carb at the work bench to find a 133 main and a 25 pilot. I figured this kit was to be used in conjunction with the filter I requested and the instructions called for the 135 main jet. Since I will be running the lid off of the air box I opted to run the larger 140 main and changed the pilot and needle to the recommended specs. The carb went back into the frame, the fuel line was connected and I fired up the engine to make sure everything was ok.

What I found was that the engine seemed to be starving for fuel as soon as I started giving any kind of throttle. Simply opening the choke as I cracked the throttle proved the problem as the engine revved how it was supposed to. A few quick calls to see what other companies recommended as base jetting for their exhaust systems let me know that the GYTR kit was waaaaaay off. After a trip to the local ATV dealership, the machine ended up with a 162.5 main jet and seems to be running great.

Here are some pics of the project and parts that were installed. I'm still waiting on my bars and risers so as soon as those come in, you'll see and hear about it. Feel free to let me know what you think about this project and stay tuned because i'm going to be building an '09 KFX 450 soon.

Outfitting A Raptor 250 For The ITP Quadcross Limited Mod Race Class |

We've already run a few stories in the magazine about the Raptor 250 but it wasn't until about a month ago that i finally threw a leg over this machine myself. I heard from Adam Campbell that this was the funnest little bike he's ever ridden and it's guaranteed to make a good rider better and i really wanted to see if it could live up to the claim.

After the editors race that Yamaha held August 6th round of the ITP Quadcross at Glen Helen Raceway, i brought home one of these tiny titans to finally experience what it could really do.

The machine issued to me was outfitted with a GYTR complete exhaust system, nerf bars and a Pro Armor kill switch. It got most of the oversized editors around the track pretty well so i figured it should move me around half way descent as well. Just to give you a few stats on me: I'm 6'1", tip the scales at 245 and when it comes to motocross racing am usually in the novice class. I'm not the fastest guy in the world, but i can definitely hold my own.

Finally on a tuesday night i grabbed some beadlock wheels with ITP MXR6 MX tires i had laying around, mounted them up and headed out to Milestone MX in Riverside, CA. I geared up, threw a leg over the quad and fired up the potent 250. Now i'm not gonna say that i didn't get a few funny looks from other people at the track. My sheer size made this quad look like one of those 25 cent rides you might find outside of a grocery store that I used to want to ride as a kid.

As I was riding around the track the first thing I had to realize was that I could not ride this like I ride my KFX 450. First it has stock suspension so it's a little tippy and second it doesn't have 1/4 the horsepower of that machine. It still has a good amount of grunt, but you're not going to be clearing any huge jumps without a long run. Because of these reasons I had to fine tune my cornering technique which has since paid off when I ride the big bike. Not only have I improved my riding, but i'm having the time of my life doing it.

I took it to the most recent round of the ITP Quadcross at Competition Park in Hesperia, CA and took a first place in limited mod 250 class, just look past the fact i was the only one in my class to race though. To help boost the popularity of this machine Yamaha is offering a brand new Raptor 250 to the class champion for the Open Mod and Limited Mod as long as you are riding one of these little machines.

Since it's starting to show some wear, I have decided that i'm going to put a graphics kit, GYTR bumper, high flow intake kit and rejet the carb, ROX anti-vibe risers and FASST Flex bars. Pics of the completed bike will be posted on my next blog about this machine. here are a few photos of me at the quadcross. Enjoy!!!

Raptor 250 Torture Test |

With all of the talented riders that have come on the scene in the last several years such as Adam McGill, Chris Bithell, and so many others, Ballance is still able to pull off that win before the season even ends. In fact, many politicians are just acting down right childish in their efforts to come up with real solutions to a problem in which I think is fairly easy to solve. Surely you’ve been affected in some way or the other by high fuel prices. When I was in high school, I remember gas prices being in the mid 80’s per gallon. Yes, that’s less than a dollar per gallon and hard to believe, I know! In fact, I used to put three to five dollars of fuel in the tank of my car and could be content for nearly a whole week in those glorious days. Furthermore, you could fill up your ATV and go ride from sun up till sun down for less than $4.00 total. Those were the good ole days indeed and we may never see them again unless we wake up as a Nation and do something about it.

Today as I write my column the circumstances seem bleak and appear to be getting worse by the day, as fuel prices have risen up to and even over $4.00 per gallon. The rise in the price of fuel is causing all kinds of issues here in the United States for families who are just trying to get by. It’s not just affecting the liquid that makes your car, truck or ATV combust and run, but it’s affecting the price of groceries and any other products a person might need for survival or for carrying on life, as we’ve always known it. And as you might have guessed, it’s hurting the ATV enthusiast in devastating ways as well. And my larger concern is that it could get worse.

Maybe this will sound selfish to some, but I’m extremely aggravated at how this is already hurting the ATV community. It’s costing us an arm and a leg to transport our machines to riding areas or events in our haulers, it’s costing approximately $16.00 just to fill up one tank in the ATV alone and as a result many of us are forced to stay home rather than getting out and experiencing life in the ways in which we enjoy. And the interesting part about it all is that it does not have to be like this. There is a solution to this problem, but many of our politicians are sucking up to environmentalists who are just distorting the truths for their own personal agendas. In the meantime, we the people are the ones that are suffering and being punished.

I among many others believe that the solution is to drill here and drill now! This would lessen our countries dependency on foreign oil and would allow the price of fuel to drop tremendously. Many specialists claim that we have a ton of oil in the U.S. just waiting to be extracted. A study recently completed by Rand Incorporated states that the U.S. Oil Shale Resources are three times larger than the current oil reserves in Saudi Arabia, yet we are not allowed to touch it thanks to our Congress. Here is another little known fact that might get you a bit angry; I know it did for me! Cuba and China recently agreed to work together to drill for oil on the waters that surround Cuba. That’s just 90 miles off the coast of the United States. As of the time I am writing this, the drilling has not started, but the preparation to do so is already underway as China has been shipping the equipment over to Cuba. The part that really infuriates me is that our own United States Congress will not allow us to drill off the coast of the United States, which would really help relieve our own citizens from needless suffering. These politicians and nut job environmentalist argue that it will destroy wildlife and such, but that’s simply not the truth. Just about every country on the planet earth that has oil reserves and the technology to drill do so. Now how is it right that we do not have the right to extract our own resources and are left to the mercy of purchasing from other countries that most often do not consider us their friends?

Ok, so what’s the truth about all the destruction talk that some claim will be caused if we were to drill here at home? Some politicians and environmentalist would like for you to believe that drilling for oil will eventually cause an oil spill, which will in turn kill helpless animals. But when Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast States, it destroyed all of the oil rigs in the Gulf without any significant damage from the spilling of oil. The truth is that we’ve become better at extracting and refining oil in the last thirty or more years, and the slight possibility of killing animals should not keep us from seeking to be energy independent from Nations who literally hate America (which is another issue for another day). We are only punishing our own selves by doing so, and America will continue to suffer if we can’t learn to wean ourselves off of foreign oil. And yes, that means us ATV guys will be greatly affected in the long run. After all, ATV’s are powered by gas burning engines and so are the vehicles that transport them. So call your Congressman and let him know you want to drill here and drill now!

But before I leave you, let’s set the record straight for the future. I totally believe that while we drill responsibly, extract oil carefully and bring the prices for fuel back to an affordable amount, we should continue seeking out new ways and sources for energy. It makes sense to me, and will only improve our lives in the here, now and the future. Wouldn’t you agree? I hope all of you can still afford to ride! It all started with my adventure to the 2008 High Lifter Mud Nationals, then off to the East Coast to race my first ever GNCC and rounding it all off with a long journey to Washington State for the most recent WORCS race. But even with all of these great experiences, I could not seem to escape something that was truly bothering me. It actually irritated me to the point that I asked Thad to let me have this column for the August issue.

In my time here at ATV Rider, I’ve become the resident side-by-side guru by many in our office. By no means do I think I am the side-by-side authority, but I do have more seat time than most and have a true passion for driving them. With that said, I am greatly affected when I see commercials and ads by random legal offices seeking out those who have been injured due to rolling a Rhino. Have you seen these, they are everywhere? Every time one of these devious commercials roll on TV, it painfully shifts my thoughts back to those horrifying days of the mid 1980’s when shows like 60 Minutes and 20/20 would attack the infamous 3 wheeler. What grieves me most are those irresponsible riders who respond to these advertisements. I’m not saying that people don’t get hurt at times while riding in vehicles like the Rhino, but probably more times than not, the injuries are due to a lack of skill, not wearing proper safety gear and even carelessness. I have been in situations myself when I have felt over confident because of the cage that surrounded me.

Now, if I crashed and injured myself because I was over confident of my ability, does that give me honest reason to hunt down the manufacturer and say they’ve built an unsafe product? Absolutely not! That’s like buying a brand new car, driving it irresponsibly, crashing it and getting hurt. Was it the fault of the cars manufacturer or was it your lack of common sense telling you “Hey, you’re going a little too fast and driving recklessly.” People must learn to accept the consequences for their own actions.

An even larger concern is people that allow their kids to drive these machines around. I’ve heard numerous stories whether true or false of small children being seriously or even fatally injured in rollover incidents. These machines are nothing more than scaled down sport vehicles. A 10 year old child has no business hauling all of his or her friends around either in the passenger seat or piled in the bed for that matter. Would you allow them to take off in your car or truck while you sit around chatting with friends? Do you really think they have the experience and even a developed sense of responsibility at this age? I don’t think so and unleashing them in a vehicle like this should be no different.

Most states do not allow people to drive an automobile until they are at least 16 years of age. Even then, there are limits as to how old their passengers can be until they have so many years of driving experience. Side-by-sides have a warning label that encourages parents not to allow anyone under the age of 16 to operate these vehicles. Do you think they spend the time and energy to put these labels on just because they feel like it? It’s scary to think of kids getting hurt or killed because of driving accidents. Why don’t people comprehend these warnings?

I’ve heard rumors of families suing the manufacturers for the harm or death of loved ones. My deepest sympathy goes out to these families for their loss, but whose fault is it really? My intentions of writing this are not to upset our readers (even though I know some will be), but rather to shed light on an increasingly horrible situation. Companies like Yamaha, Kawasaki and Polaris have spent many years of research and design to bring us the greatest machines ever. If enough of these bloodthirsty ambulance-chasing lawyers lure in clients through these commercials, the side-by-side world could come quickly crashing down. How do I know that this could happen, well, look to the 3-wheeler market that was completely wiped from existence in the 80’s. It’s happened before, and you can bet that it could happen again.

So what will we be left with if that happens? The good news is that the solution is actually simple and easy if we all band together. We all should learn to drive within our means. Take time to figure out the handling of your machine and even make upgrades that can make it safer at higher performing levels. Second of all is to keep the kids out of the drivers’ seat. I know many kids out there are not going to like me for this one, but it sure beats more injured kids and loosing side-x-sides forever. Lastly is to take responsibility for your actions. It’s too easy now days to put the blame on someone else for our own lack of good judgment.

To those who are fuming from my words, I apologize if I come across as the side-by-side police. But I do want to bring a sense of awareness to all enthusiasts and try to stop this snowballing affect before it’s too late. The more widespread these commercials become and the more people respond to them trying to make a quick buck, the worse things will get for the sport we love and are so passionate about. After manufacturers did away with 3 wheelers, they also agreed to stop making high performance ATV’s for over 10 years.

Luckily, those of us who loved this sport spent 10 exhausting years nurturing it back to health. Do we want this same kind of agreement to happen again? I know for a fact that I don’t. And if you want to continue enjoying your weekends on side-by-sides, you should join me in fighting for our right to continue. I think there are already enough Rhinos on the endangered species list.

Until I get cranky about something else and need to rant again, keep the rubber side down! And do it with responsibility please.

Eli
Associate Editor
ATV Rider Magazine

Eli Madero |

GBC has pledged to pay out a 1st place prize of $7500.00 in the Pro Utility ATV class, which is the highest amount ever paid for a Pro Utility class win, and $7500.00 for the winner of the Pro Sport ATV class as well.

In addition to the enormous Pro payouts, GBC Motorsports is also heading up a contingency program for the event. In order to be eligible for the GBC contingency program, every machine used on the team must have on GBC Tires for the entire duration of the race. The Pro Sport ATV and Pro Utility ATV class contingency payout is $500.00 each class for 1st place. The ATV Sport and ATV Utility Ironman classes will have a $250.00 payout for 1st place, while all other classes will pay out $100.00 for a 1st place finish.

The Heartland Challenge is a true ATV endurance race that is designed for the Pro's, to the amateurs, to UTV classes, and features the toughest class of all, the Ironman class. The two-day event offers plenty of fun and excitement for everyone. There will be 13 classes racing all at the same time, with NO breaks. Each team will be allowed up to 3 riders per team with as many quads. All teams will be allowed to use only one quad at a time, while all other quads will be held in a secured location. Each team will be allowed to switch out quads through out the 10-hour event, but no repairs or inspections will be allowed on the ATVs while in impound. There will be no breaks or time-outs during the race, which means you will not lose the lead you have on the other teams.

The Heartland Challenge also will be offering the very first 3-Hour Challenge for youth ATV riders with 5 different classes for ages ranging from 4 to 15 years old. The 3-Hour Challenge teams will be just like the big boys with up to 3 riders with as many quads without any breaks.

Side-by-Side racing has also been included by popular demand to compete in their own 3 hour challenge on Friday evening. We will be offering 4 classes and the racing will wrap-up after sunset, so lights will be required. A full schedule of events and classes, along with pre-registration information, can be found on the Heartland Challenge's website at www.heartlandchallenge.com.

www.piaa.com
www.gbcmotorsports.com

Spread The Word-Heartland Challenge Endurance Race! |

Mike, Johnny, Austin and myself put down the cameras and headed out to just ride. Usually when we go out, we are doing some sort of testing, photos or whatever for the magazine. I love my job; so don’t take that the wrong way. But sometimes, you just have to leave the work behind and ride for fun. And that’s what we did.

We packed up the trailer with the Can-Am DS450, Mikes woods built Suzuki LTR-450 (which is sweet by the way), Polaris Outlaw 525S and a Yamaha YFZ-450 and headed to Durhamtown Plantation in East Georgia. It probably cost us $200 in fuel with travel and filling up the quads. Oh well! We really didn’t care what we were riding, so long as we were riding. It was really dusty and dry, but we had such a blast just riding for the fun of it. Did I mention it was like 100 degrees out? We switched quads about every hour so that we could experience something a little different. If you ever get a chance, this is a great way to spend your day riding with your buddies. Switch machines about every hour.

We got to put in some laps on the MX track, hit a ton of ATV trails and even explored a new area (a new off-road jeep park) that DP is in the progress of opening up. And to top it all off, we got a ton of laughs as Austin kept smacking into trees. To be honest, spending this day out riding was just what I needed to clear my head. I just wanted to share a positive experience that was great for me. Just get out and ride for fun when you can. It’s my free form of therapy.

Thad Josey
Editor-ATV Rider Magazine

Thad Josey |
