GBC has pledged to pay out a 1st place prize of $7500.00 in the Pro Utility ATV class, which is the highest amount ever paid for a Pro Utility class win, and $7500.00 for the winner of the Pro Sport ATV class as well.

In addition to the enormous Pro payouts, GBC Motorsports is also heading up a contingency program for the event. In order to be eligible for the GBC contingency program, every machine used on the team must have on GBC Tires for the entire duration of the race. The Pro Sport ATV and Pro Utility ATV class contingency payout is $500.00 each class for 1st place. The ATV Sport and ATV Utility Ironman classes will have a $250.00 payout for 1st place, while all other classes will pay out $100.00 for a 1st place finish.

The Heartland Challenge is a true ATV endurance race that is designed for the Pro's, to the amateurs, to UTV classes, and features the toughest class of all, the Ironman class. The two-day event offers plenty of fun and excitement for everyone. There will be 13 classes racing all at the same time, with NO breaks. Each team will be allowed up to 3 riders per team with as many quads. All teams will be allowed to use only one quad at a time, while all other quads will be held in a secured location. Each team will be allowed to switch out quads through out the 10-hour event, but no repairs or inspections will be allowed on the ATVs while in impound. There will be no breaks or time-outs during the race, which means you will not lose the lead you have on the other teams.

The Heartland Challenge also will be offering the very first 3-Hour Challenge for youth ATV riders with 5 different classes for ages ranging from 4 to 15 years old. The 3-Hour Challenge teams will be just like the big boys with up to 3 riders with as many quads without any breaks.

Side-by-Side racing has also been included by popular demand to compete in their own 3 hour challenge on Friday evening. We will be offering 4 classes and the racing will wrap-up after sunset, so lights will be required. A full schedule of events and classes, along with pre-registration information, can be found on the Heartland Challenge's website at www.heartlandchallenge.com.

www.piaa.com
www.gbcmotorsports.com

Mike, Johnny, Austin and myself put down the cameras and headed out to just ride. Usually when we go out, we are doing some sort of testing, photos or whatever for the magazine. I love my job; so don’t take that the wrong way. But sometimes, you just have to leave the work behind and ride for fun. And that’s what we did.

We packed up the trailer with the Can-Am DS450, Mikes woods built Suzuki LTR-450 (which is sweet by the way), Polaris Outlaw 525S and a Yamaha YFZ-450 and headed to Durhamtown Plantation in East Georgia. It probably cost us $200 in fuel with travel and filling up the quads. Oh well! We really didn’t care what we were riding, so long as we were riding. It was really dusty and dry, but we had such a blast just riding for the fun of it. Did I mention it was like 100 degrees out? We switched quads about every hour so that we could experience something a little different. If you ever get a chance, this is a great way to spend your day riding with your buddies. Switch machines about every hour.

We got to put in some laps on the MX track, hit a ton of ATV trails and even explored a new area (a new off-road jeep park) that DP is in the progress of opening up. And to top it all off, we got a ton of laughs as Austin kept smacking into trees. To be honest, spending this day out riding was just what I needed to clear my head. I just wanted to share a positive experience that was great for me. Just get out and ride for fun when you can. It’s my free form of therapy.

Thad Josey
Editor-ATV Rider Magazine

Then the toothpaste. Then tires.

Now Chinese manufacturers are facing another credibility issue: their ATVs. This time, though, they may not be at fault.

According to Bloomberg, Honda Motor *** Yamaha Motors, and other ATV OEMs are asking the U.S. government to implement standard safety regulations.

Interestingly, safety is not necessarily the companies' primary concern. The motivation may be profit, pure and simple. Artic Cat, Suzuki, as well as Honda and Yamaha dominated the ATV segment until 2004. That's when Chinese manufacturers flooded the market with less expensive vehicles. The companies actually spent years fighting any form of federal legislation including lawsuits by regulators over ATV accidents and safety. With such a history, most analysts view Honda's request with less than enthusiasm. Worse for the ATV manufacturers, there's little evidence to support their claims. States Rachel Weintraub, director of product safety and senior counsel for the Consumer Federation of America, "The data does not show that there has been a surge of (Chinese) recalls or adverse incidents. An ATV-import bill alone does not deal with these broader safety problems.''

Both are powered by a 749cc V-twin engine and mated to a Constant Velocity Transmission (CVT). The child was on his lap when they crashed into—get this—a parked car.

According to WPDE, ATV safety regulations warn not to have additional passengers on the 4x4 and you’d think it would be common sense, especially, not to put a toddler while riding. While the state of South Carolina has been considering a law to ban passengers on ATVs, the grandfather will not be charged since there is currently nothing on the books and the accident occurred on private property.

"It's a tragedy," said neighbor David York, who heard the entire accident. (Dec. 28, 2006) — The WPSA PowerSports ATV Tour will sanction 27 Pro, Pro Am, Youth and Amateur classes during the 2007 ATV racing season. Due to an overwhelmingly positive response, the Tour has added the Pro SuperSport “UTV” class to its Pro lineup, which also includes the popular SuperQuad Pro 450 MX and the Pro Stock QuadTerrain Challenge classes.

“When we ran the side-by-side vehicles at our last race of 2006, the excitement from our fans, our teams and our stakeholders was unmistakable, making it an obvious addition to our already thrilling Pro ATV racing show,” said PowerSports Entertainment, Inc. CEO Rick Murphy. “This, along with some important changes in our Pro-Am, Amateur and Youth classes, should make 2007 one of our most exciting seasons on record.”

In addition to the changes in the Pro classes, the Tour will provide alternative lines for riders wishing to run in the Amateur QuadTerrain Challenge classes, which includes Stock Lites (601-700cc), Stock Unlimited (601+cc), and Modified.

“We are dedicated to our ladder system in the PowerSports ATV Tour,” said Scott O’Malley, president of PowerSports Entertainment, Inc. “It’s important we allow Amateur riders, who have limited budgets and experience, a place to compete with an eye on stepping up to our top QuadTerrain Challenge Class. Alternative, amateur, lines will give these riders a place to compete without the concern of damaging equipment or racing at a level beyond their experience.”

YOUTH CLASSES
The Tour has made several notable changes to its youth classes. Production Lites 13-15 will remain the same as in years past, while the 0-50cc Junior and Senior Classes have been modified. The 0-50cc Limited Class (4-6) will be open to quads with automatic clutch, and CVT belt drives, while the 0-55cc Production Class (6-8) will be open to quads with auto clutches.

The balance of the youth classes are: 51-70cc (production, auto clutch 6-11); 70cc (shifter, 6-11); 71-90cc, 2 Stroke, 75-125cc, 4 Stroke Production (8-11); 71-90cc, 2 Stroke, 75-125cc, 4 Stroke Production (12-15); 90cc Production (CVT belt drive, 8-15); 75-125cc 4 Stroke Production (8-15); 90cc 2 Stroke, 125cc 4 Stroke Modified (8-12); and 105cc 2 Stroke, 150cc 4 Stroke SuperMini (12-15).

The Tour has also split the women’s class into two classes: A and B/C.

The 2007 Rulebook, which is in the final stages of completion, will be distributed soon via www.PowerSportsTour.com.

About the PowerSports ATV Tour
The PowerSports ATV Championship Tour is North America’s premier professional ATV racing circuit, featuring QuadMX, QuadTerrain and SuperSport Pro series action as well as more than 20 amateur classes for adults, women and children. Everyone involved in the process of drafting the new ordinance agreed it worked well during the recent Thanksgiving Holiday. Mike Romage, Supervising Code Enforcement officer in the south desert for San Bernardino County, stated “Judging from the success we’ve seen during the first six months of enforcement, I am confident the ordinance will continue to reduce OHV-related problems.” Two staging permits were issued as a result of the new ordinance. The permit holders were monitored closely by both code enforcement and San Bernardino County Sheriffs. All conditions stated in those permits were met.

Since its July 2006 implementation law enforcement and code enforcement officers made an effort to educate the riding public about the new ordinance. Over 5000 flyers were distributed informing people of the new requirements. Citations were only issued after the 45 day grace period. Meg Grossglass, Off-Road Business Association (ORBA) representative involved in crafting the ordinance, stated, “I am pleased that this ordinance has reduced the amount of illegal activity while still allowing families to enjoy riding together.”

The process used to draft this particular ordinance was unique. The county agreed to the formation of a group of stakeholders composed of environmentalists, OHV organizations and community groups from around the county. The goal of this group was to find a compromise on this sometimes very contentious issue and then go before the Supervisors united in their support for the agreement reached. After two very long meetings the stakeholders agreed on the language used in this ordinance. “We hope that other counties around the country look to the process used by San Bernardino when attempting to solve OHV-related problems,” commented Fred Wiley, Executive Director of ORBA.

For more information on ORBA and their efforts to improve off-road riding for you, go to www.orba.biz

The kids (and adults) down there went crazy over the stickers we were handing out." />

"So how's work?" is the number one question I get asked by friends and family back home ("When are you going to pay back that $200 you owe me?" is the #2 question). So what's it really like working at ATV Rider? ...

Well, it's not as glamorous as it sounds. For instance, today Bryan and I went riding at Texas Canyon. Now, riding in the middle of the week when there are like 5 other people there is great, especially in a packed city like Los Angeles that sees its riding areas become mega-packed on weekends. But it's not like we get to do that every single day. In fact, it was the first time we'd gone riding in 2-3 weeks. I know some of you would kill to ride that often, but when you work at an ATV magazine, 2-3 weeks without any seat time is an eternity!

Magazines don't write themselves. It requires a lot of people doing a lot of different things in order to crank out ATV Rider every month. Riding around and testing ATVs and different products occupies only a small portion of our time- the rest is spent thinking about what we're going to say in the articles and writing those articles. Then you have to proofread them, etc., etc. I tell people back in Georgia that it takes a few days (or longer) to create an article, and about 10 minutes to read it.

Once the story is written and the photos are shot, the job doesn't end there. Art Director Joe Neric comes up with an idea in his head about how he wants the story to look, so he lays it out using his graphics software and makes it really eye-catching and more interesting to read.

Then there's the cover. Did you know that magazines spend hours analyzing their covers? The cover is so crucial, because think about it- there are literally dozens of magazines to choose from at a newsstand. Most of those magazine covers are partially hidden behind other magazines, so the cover must be as cool-looking as possible. I never really gave it much thought, until I started working here.

Now, don't think I'm complaining- I really enjoy my job! It sounds kind of cheesy, but I was really proud to see myself in ATV Rider on the magazine rack at Wal-Mart the other day, right next to Oprah's magazine, Horse and Rider magazine, and Crafts and Beads or something like that. But if you're looking for a 9-to-5, Monday-through-Friday type of job...this ain't it. After all, it's not like we can just run blank pages in the magazine and say "oops, sorry, we ran out of time to put anything here." We can't stop until the story is done, so often that translates into 12 or 18 hour days, and when we were in Mexico for the Baja 1000, we even had one 30+ hour day!

I hope I've given you a glimpse of what the magazine world is like, through the eyes of a newbie. Keep checking our blogs for more of the inside scoop about the world of ATVs.

Brian Purtymun

With major festivities planned in Tijuana and Ensenada along with a 1,200-plus mile race to the tip of the Baja California peninsula in Cabo San Lucas, the 2007 granddaddy of all desert races will be held Nov. 10-16.

In making the announcement, Sal Fish, SCORE CEO and President, praised the efforts of government and tourism officials in both states of Baja California and Baja California Sur, saying, “We would not be here today if it were not for the coordinated efforts and cooperation of both of these Mexican states and its counties. This anniversary celebration is a monumental undertaking and it will be the most memorable in the long and storied history of the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 in large part due to the dedicated efforts of the people of the Baja Peninsula.”

Starting with special festivities in the heart of Tijuana on Saturday, Nov. 10, and a unique parade of vehicles, and all of the colorful traditional pre-race pageantry will once again be held in Ensenada on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 11, and all day Monday, Nov. 12).

The green flag will drop in Ensenada on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 13 and the last checkered flag will drop in Cabo San Lucas during the early morning of Friday, Nov. 16. In between Ensenada and Cabo San Lucas, the 1,200-plus mile course will traverse much of the ruggedly majestic Baja California peninsula.

Nearly 500 sturdy adventurers, from over 40 U.S. States and 20 countries, are expected to compete 28 Pro and 5 Sportsman classes for cars, trucks, motorcycles and ATVs, in this once-in-a-lifetime experience.

“The SCORE Baja 1000 continues to draw interest from all over the world and we now find second and even third generation racers appearing at the starting line with their family patriarchs cheering for their children,” said Fish. “This event continues to be the focal point of the SCORE Desert Series each year and to celebrate our 40th anniversary may just add the most colorful chapter to the legacy of the SCORE Baja 1000.”

Among the festivities planned for Saturday (Nov. 10) in Tijuana are: a special SCORE Baja Leap competition at the Tijuana River bed. At the Tijuana City Hall Plaza a SCORE Baja Pit Crew Challenge will be held, followed by a Xtreme MX Acrobatics show. Concluding Saturday’s pre-race celebration will be a memorable SCORE Baja 1000 40th Anniversary Welcome party on Revolution Avenue.

On Sunday (Nov. 11) Tijuana pre-race celebration will culminate with a historic parade of SCORE entries from Tijuana’s Bull Ring (where the legend began in 1967) through the main streets of Tijuana down the Toll Road to Ensenada, starting at 11 a.m. and arriving at 2 p.m.

Once in Ensenada, all of the popular and traditional pre-race activities will be held. On Sunday, Nov. 11, the arrival fiesta of the race entries will be held at the Ventana al Mar from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. with autograph sessions, photo opportunities, a vendor village and live music.

Also on Sunday, racer registration will be held from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the San Nicolas Hotel.

Monday’s pre-race activities (Nov. 12) in Ensenada will continue with racer registration at the San Nicolas (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and the colorful SCORE manufacturer’s midway, contingency and tech inspection of all race vehicles from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. adjacent to the San Nicolas. The pre-race driver/rider briefing will be held at 7 p.m. in the Cathedral Room of the Riviera del Pacifico Cultural Center.

The magnificent start of the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 will once again be on Blvd. Costero starting with motorcycles and ATVs at 6:30 a.m. followed by the cars and trucks at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13. The start will once again include the extremely popular and spectator-friendly run up the Ensenada Wash.

While exact details of the race route are still being finalized, SCORE officials said it will be similar to the 2006 SCORE Baja 1000 before heading over to Todos Santos and then to an amazing three-day long finish line SCORE Survivor’s Celebration in Cabo San Lucas, Baja California Sur.

In its first 39 years, the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 has started 32 times in Ensenada, three times in Mexicali (1972, 1993, 1994), twice in Tijuana (1967, 1995) once in Santo Tomas (1998) and once in Ojos Negros (1999). The legendary race has finished in Ensenada 18 times, in La Paz 17 times, in Mexicali two times (1993, 1994), once in Ojos Negros (1999) and once in Cabo San Lucas (2000).

The famous and not-so-famous have tried their hand at conquering the Baja and they have come from all walks of life. Mark Thatcher, son of Great Britian’s then-prime minister Margaret Thatcher, raced in the 1982 SCORE Baja 1000. Celebrities James Garner, Ted Nugent and the late Steve McQueen all battled the Baja in the early 1970s and many racers from other forms of motorsports crossed over to try their skills.

Among the drivers from other arenas who have tested the Baja were Indy Car racers Rick and Roger Mears, Parnelli Jones, Danny Ongias, Danny Sullivan, Jimmy Vasser, Buddy Rice, Sebastien Bourdais, Oriol Servia, Roberto Guerrero, Michel Jourdain Jr., Johnny Unser and Mike and Robbie Groff, NASCAR’s Robby Gordon, Jimmie Johnson, Boris Said and Brendan Gaughan, SCCA legend Elliot Forbes-Robinson, World Rally Champion’s Armin Schwarz, world motorcycle champions Malcolm Smith and Larry Roeseler, Motocross legends Ricky Johnson, Travis Pastrana and Jimmie Johnson (now a NASCAR champion), drag racers Don Prudhomme and Larry Minor and legendary SCORE founder and motorsports innovator Mickey Thompson. Academy Award winning actor, racer and race team owner Paul Newman raced in the 2004 event. Jesse James, of ‘Monster Garage’ fame, and Hollywood film and TV star Patrick Dempsey have both raced this classic in both 2005 and 2006.

Next year’s race will commemorate the achievements of legendary desert racers like Rod Hall, Ron Bishop, Johnny Johnson, and Larry Roeseler. Hall, with a record 18 class wins (including one overall win in 1972), and Bishop are the only two racers who have competed in 39 SCORE Baja 1000 races. Hall will be a favorite in the Stock Mini class while Bishop, is once again be back where he always has--racing every year on a Motorcycle. Johnson, now retired, had 15 class wins, amazingly in eight different classes. Roeseler, has won 15 times in this race, including 12 overall wins (10 on a motorcycle). Roeseler will share driving duties again this year with seven-time SCORE Class 1 season point champion Troy Herbst. Roeseler and Herbst are the three-time defending Class 1 race winners in this race.

Lured by the same siren that enraptured the Ekins brothers in the 1950s, the Tecate SCORE Baja 1000 remains as the No. 1 target of adventurers the world over, not to mention the cadre of pro and semi-pro desert racers who consider it the fitting climax to their racing season each year. Only 2007 promises to combine the best of the first 39 years into one masterful, once-in-a-lifetime event.

For more information regarding SCORE International, contact 818.225.8402 or visit the official website of the SCORE Desert Series at www.score-international.com.
