Two and a half hours down I-175 outside of Dallas, Texas, lies a quaint little town known to most in the ATV industry for an event that happens once a year. Most of the year this town has a population of around 14,500, and in the spring for the last seven years its population has actually almost doubled. We travel here each year to see the sights and sounds of the High lifter Mud Nationals as Jacksonville, Texas, becomes the center for mud riding, ATV building, motor heads who love good music and good Cajun-style food. For most, it’s a few days of riding, relaxing with buddies and family that takes priority. Then there are the racers who come here for the sheer excitement of the event as well as the bragging rights and cash payouts.

Way back in 2002, Kawasaki took the ATV world by storm when it unveiled the Prairie 650. In my opinion, that machine started the whole sport-utility class that’s so competitive today. On the GNCC circuit that year, you couldn’t flick a booger without one landing on a Prairie. Over the years, the power and reliability of the Kawi V-twin left most other machines in the dust. As the sport-utility market grew, demand for a more comfortable Independent Rear Suspension (IRS) sealed the Prairie’s fate, replacing it with the more civilized and comfortable Kawasaki Brute Force 750 and 650. The Brute Force had the same killer powerplant as the Prairie, but weird handling and tough steering often made buyers look elsewhere. In 2007, Yamaha and Honda took ATVs to a whole new level by integrating Electric Power Steering (EPS) into their product line. As editors, we all knew that for anybody to compete, they’d have to do the same. As the last major ATV manufacturer to finally add EPS to its lineup, Kawasaki would finally debut its version on an all-new Brute Force 750, and we were stoked.

Each year we attend the biggest event of the mud riding season, the High Lifter ATV Mud Nationals in Jacksonville, Texas. At this event we will see many products that make the fun of mud riding possible. With the invention of things like huge tires and lifts the once-nonexistent industry has soared to new heights. With bigger tires and suspension that’s tweaked for deep bogging the engine also needs some additional modifications to hold it all together. In no particular order, we name a few items that many mudders consider essential to really enjoy the art of muddin’.
