After a sixth at round seven, Rob Weis topped the field in his second OMA start.
Rob Weis wasn't satisfied with sixth at round seven in Minnesota so he traveled to Waukon, Iowa, for round nine with revenge in mind--and he got it. Not only did he improve upon the result of his first foray into the Parts Unlimited Off-road Motorcycle and ATV Nationals, he did so spectacularly, winning the Scott/Acerbis Coyote Cross-country on his Country Sports Honda/Maxxis/Moose-sponsored TRX450R. He completed seven laps of the challenging, rolling course and enjoyed a comfortable cushion of one minute and three seconds over runner-up Jonathon Hughes, who in turn was 50 seconds ahead of Jake Voss.
"The last time I raced here I got two flat tires in one race," Weis recalled.
This time, he had no such problems.
Early leader Kenneth Staake...
Early leader Kenneth Staake obviously had problems, which accounts for him finishing fifth.
Series regular Kenneth Staake got a good jump off the start and led the first couple laps with Weis and Hughes tucking in fairly close behind. "The top three leaders swapped back and forth a couple times the first two laps," Weis said.
Staake, however, relinquished his position on lap three, the visor of his helmet askew and indicative of a fairly spectacular get-off. Weis jetted into the lead at that point and kept it to the finish with Hughes unable to catch his friend.
"I got second off the start, and I got up in the lead for a little while," Hughes reported. "We traded spots a little bit, then finally I got dropped back into third and ran there I thought for the whole day, but one guy bent a tie rode somewhere along the line and I didn't realize I passed him until the end."
Runner-up in his OMA debut,...
Runner-up in his OMA debut, Jonathon Hughes found the event to his liking.
The Z1R Helmets TRX450R-mounted Hughes added with a laugh, "I ride with Rob here [all the time] so we come to the races together, we practice together--we're used to riding together. We've battled some races before together."
Voss started out in fifth place, moving to fourth on the second lap and third on the fifth time around. A regular in the MXC series where he leads in points, the Iowan said, "I had a bad start; I took a wrong turn the first lap, but I made my way back. It was real rocky out there. That's something different--it's kind of hard on the hands and arms."
But that didn't prevent some impressive results by others. A-class winner Cody Julson, for example, was quick enough to finish fifth overall, 25 seconds ahead of class runner-up and sixth overall Chris Safar. And not far behind in seventh overall was B-class victor Brad Petersen. Then there was Larry Falls, the +30 winner in eighth overall, who was just three seconds faster than +30 runner-up Luke Olberding.
