After stopping to cross public roads, racers are encouraged to get back up to speed.
The American Honda-backed duo of Wayne Matlock and Chad Prull enjoyed a practically perfect day after drawing the first start position for the TSCO Vegas to Reno race, round three of Best in the Desert's Silver State Series.
Prull was the first of the Quad Pros to get the green light at the start line about an hour and a half north of Las Vegas, and from there to the actual finish line in Dayton, 584 miles away, the only dust he and Matlock contended with belong to the motorcycles they caught and passed on their Alba/Precision Concepts/IMS-Roll TRX450R. Their final time of 10 hours, 59 minutes and 24 seconds also placed them an excellent ninth overall in the combined ATV and bike results.
Josh Edwards and Jeff Hancock finished as runner-up in Quad Pro on their LKH Farming/Maxxis/Regina-backed TRX450R in 11:36:24 and were 17 in combined results. Quad Experts Rick Cecco, Cory Hove and Tyler Lenig ended up beating most of the Pro teams on their Alba/Streamline/ITP TRX450R, their 11:41:08 earning them third ATV to the finish and 19th in combined results, one spot better than Pros Michael Cafro and Danny Prather's Temecula Motorsports/Maxxis/Elka TRX450R entry.
"We just had to battle through the motorcycle dust [all day]," Matlock reported at the finish. "The last one I passed was after pit 16 (the final one). You pass them all day long, and they don't like it, either! It feels like [we] passed a hundred of those things.
"I don't know how many [Pro and Expert bike teams] started in front of us, but we finished, physically, 14th overall [and ninth on adjusted time]. We probably [actually] passed 60, 70 bikes."
"The bike was working great; it was just a freeway out there," Prull added.
The win kept alive their perfect record so far in BITD this season, with three for three moving them farther ahead in points over Nick Nelson and Greg Stuart, who DNFed. They now face the final three races of the season: the ATV-only Avi 150, the Vegas 300 and the Henderson's Terrible 400.
