Driving Impressions
With the machine complete and no real short course-style tracks available, we headed to Quinn Motorsports' private MX track where ATV MX Pros like Pat Brown, Jeremy Lawson, Dustin Wimmer and Jason Dunkelberger regularly train. As you can imagine, most of the Pro-caliber jumps were a bit ambitious for the RZR, but the smaller stuff was just fine. Despite 35° weather, the Holz motor roared to life without hesitation, and within a few minutes the RZR would see its first bit of airtime. Deciphering which type of throttle application worked best with which type of jump face took a minute, but once the code was cracked the RZR flew straight, and without nose-diving.
The fully customizable appearance...
The fully customizable appearance of the Beard Super TZ seats and G4 Graphics kit make the RZR a show-stopper.
Power wise, the RZR absolutely rips. The Holz motor never stops pulling and bounces it out of corners as if shot out of a catapult. Pulling a holeshot would be easy regardless of the driver's reaction time. The Muzzys exhaust delivers an aggressive sound without being obnoxious and seems to work great with the package. Despite going through two full tanks of gas, the machine never seemed to get too hot, which is a testament to the Fluidyne radiator's competence.
Suspension wise, the DFR kit works amazingly well everywhere from berms to whoops to landing off of jumps. The added travel inspires confidence, which works great when your Elka shocks refuse to bottom out. The increased stability makes you want to corner faster and harder than you would ever dream of in a stock-width machine, and even the nastiest breaking bumps are soaked up with relative ease. A bit more adjustability in the shocks would help fine-tune the suspension, but overall it works better than I had hoped for.
The Black Magic +6" suspension...
The Black Magic +6" suspension arms helped transform our peppy little rough rider into a high-performance terrain tamer.
Ergonomically, the RZR is really comfortable for anyone 6' tall or shorter. Anyone taller would feel a bit cramped thanks to the lack of space between the back of the seats and the lower rollcage bar. The Beard seats are more comfortable than your average Lazy Boy rocker and do a great job of bracing you in place (picture a big hug from Jarrod before he started eating Subway). My biggest complaint on the seats would be a lack of drainage, rinsing off between photos left huge puddles, which was a minor inconvenience. The 4-point DFR harnesses thread through the seats and keep you put without making you uncomfortable. The Grant steering wheel looks great and offers a place to keep your thumbs from getting smashed while driving.
Traction wise, the ITP Holeshots worked phenomenally regardless of the surface conditions. From ice at sunrise to slick red clay by sundown, the Holeshots found traction and plenty of it.
As a whole, the RZR is hard to beat. The machine looks, runs, and handles great. It's comfortable and safe enough to inspire confidence and will be a force to reckon with on any short course or MX track. Thanks to every one of the companies and individuals involved in this build. Despite tough times, we built an amazing machine.
