Oakley MX OFrame Sand Goggles
When it comes to goggles, there are dozens of choices from which to choose. If you're an avid dune rider like I am, there's one key feature you're looking for: How much sand/dust is able to pass through the foam and face padding built into the goggles? I've tried many different goggles, and to some extent, each one allows dirt to pass, eventually finding its way into your eyes, up until now. I recently had the opportunity to try the Oakley MX OFrame Sand Goggles and all I can say is, wow! I've never worn a goggle that could literally allow you to be roosted directly in the face and not allow in a spec of sand. While tagging along with a group of riders blazing through the dunes, we encountered some of the finest sand, dust and silt the dunes had to offer. When the dust had settled, not a single grain of sand ever made it into my eyes. It seemed as if someone could literally throw a fistful of sand directly at you without your worrying that your vision will be impaired. These goggles are sure to be favorites to those riders who wear contact lenses.
In addition to their ability to keep your eyes irritation-free, the goggles also feature nicely tinted lenses with a coating that keeps them from fogging up. The tinted lenses bring out the shadows of the terrain, making hidden desert features more visible and drastically increasing your comfort level since you can see things that are normally hidden when the sun is directly overhead. While the MX OFrame is an exceptional daytime-use goggle, as the sun starts to set, make sure you're close to camp because the tint is dark enough to make night riding virtually impossible.
The only negative feedback that I can come up with is that the good stuff that keeps the dust and sand away from your eyes also restricts airflow. This means that when you sweat, all of that condensation has nowhere to go but on the lens, which can cause a little distortion. A quick wipe with a clean cloth or tissue will instantly clear your vision but it does get annoying.
All in all, I think these goggles are some of the best I've ever worn when blasting through the tall dunes of Glamis, California. No longer will I be rubbing my eyes from the irritating feeling of sand that squeezed through other goggle foams. These are going to be a staple in my goggle bag and should be in yours as well. With a price tag of $40, the sand-specific goggles are reasonably priced compared to the competition and offer an additional line of defense against the elements. -Eli Madero
