Chad Prull (pictured) and Wayne Matlock ran down the leaders to win day one at the Nevada 1000.
Day one of the four-day-long inaugural McMillin Nevada 1000, round four of Best in the Desert's Silver State Series, belonged to those with the least amount of troubleor at least those who overcame adversity best. In the 221mile run from Beatty to Tonopah, Wayne Matlock and Chad Prull were second off the line and chased Baja 500 winners Cyle Chislock and Josh Frederick. However, flat tires killed Chislock and Frederick's hopes of staying out front on their TRX450R.
Despite hitting one rock and severely denting the front right rim on their LT-Z400-based machine, Matlock and Prull nevertheless avoided major downtime or slowing and pulled off the win on day one in an unofficial four hours, 46 minutes, seven seconds.
Flat tires cost Frederick (pictured) and Chislock; they finished day one in third.
Jimmy Stephensen and Greg Stuart ended up second Quad Pro in an unofficial 4:48:26 on their KFX400 while Chislock and Frederick held on for third in an unofficial 4:50:59 after a couple flats.
That's not to say Matlock and Prull's morning was entirely trouble-free. As Prull reported, "It was pit two, I believe. [The Chislock/Frederick bike and I] both came in with flats; I was right behind Josh Frederick. I got a flat about 100 yards before the pit.
"We were both racing to change them and both went out; Wayne was actually behind Josh going out. At pit three they had another tire change and we didn't. We gassed up and we were gone. That's where we put a lot of time on them."
The remaining three days of the race will start and finish in Tonopah. Days two and three will be 331 and 323 miles, respectively, while the final day will be a 119-mile sprint.
