UXBRIDGE — The former owner of the defunct Uxbridge MotorSports Park has submitted a petition for a special town meeting to amend the zoning bylaws to allow his park to reopen.
The special town meeting has been scheduled for 7 p.m. March 30 in Uxbridge High School.
Town Manager Michael Szlosek told selectmen last night the town has received a petition containing the signatures of 200 registered voters asking for the special town meeting to amend the bylaw to allow the park to reopen on Quaker Highway.
Mr. Szlosek said the petition’s sponsor is the former owner of the Uxbridge MotorSports Park. In 2007, a state Appeals Court ruling forced Stephen M. Griff to shut it down, ending a years-long battle with the town about whether the park was a permitted use under town bylaws.
The petition, posted in Uxbridge Town Hall, is a “request to open the Dirt Bike Track Motorcross Park.” The petition seeks to amend the existing zoning bylaw to include motocross facilities and motor sports facilities in the definition of “outdoor recreation.”
The petition further defines “motocross facility” as “an outdoor facility used for training activities and controlled competitive events involving off-road motorcycles or a closed course and not to be considered a racetrack.”
The Planning Board will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. March 10 in Town Hall, and the selectmen will hold a public hearing at 7 p.m. March 15 in Town Hall.
