From the May/June 2012 issue of ATV Rider Magazine.
Like many accessories in the ATV world, the type of boot you buy greatly depends on what type of quad riding you’ll be doing. When riding 4x4s, I typically find myself on tight and technical trails that have me off the quad as much as I’m on it. I’ve even found myself hiking miles from my ATV to get to remote fishing or hunting destination. Does this sound like your type of ATV outing? If so, there are good low-cost options like Thor’s shorty 50/50 boots, Alpinestars’ Tech 2 boots or even a good pair of hiking boots will do the trick. If you aren’t the hiking guy or would prefer slamming through tree line trails or hitting top speeds on fire roads, you’d better invest in a good pair of motocross-style riding boots. Although some buyers may look at a pair of MX boots, glance at the price tag and say, “Whoa, I’ll stick with my sneakers.” No! Sneakers or even a good pair of work boots are not designed for thrashing around at high speeds on an ATV. These MX-style boots feature gripper soles, flexible ankles and toe padding for shifting and braking, adjustable buckles and heat protection from your engine and exhaust. In the end, these boots do enough that they’re worth the investment. So leave the work boots and tennis sneakers in the closet and invest in a real pair of riding boots. To help with your search, we put together our top 20 riding boots for under $300.
