ATV riding and racing is more than just a hobby to Scott Wright: It is his lifestyle. He is best known for his co-ownership of IMS Products but has a history of riding and racing that dates back to the mid-1970s. Starting out on a three-wheeled machine, Wright was quickly hooked and has spent the last 30 years dedicating his time and efforts to the development of our sport. We sat down with Wright as he unloaded a little history on us.
ATVR: How did you get into riding and racing ATVs?SW: I got started riding three-wheelers back in the mid-'70s for recreational purposes. In '83 after reading all of the race coverage in the magazines, I decided to jump in and give racing a try. I ended up winning my first race.
What types of racing did you participate in and how long did your race career last?I did mostly desert and Baja styles of racing and won some championships. I raced until '89 when factory support began to diminish. This was our largest incentive for racing, and everything started to slow down as a result of the manufacturers pulling out. My body had also taken such punishment from years of racing, so I decided to hang it up.
How did you get your start in the industry? In '89, I left my construction job to take on a position at a local Honda/Yamaha dealership. I eventually became general manager and began running the dealership in all aspects. I worked at this dealership for about four and a half years and gained a ton of knowledge about the industry.
How did you hook up with IMS Products?Throughout my race career, IMS Products supported my race program. Through this sponsorship, I was able to build a relationship with the founder, C.H. Wheat. In '94, I had the opportunity to join the IMS team as a general manager and became a co-owner about five years later.
IMS has shown tremendous amounts of success. To what do you credit that success?First and foremost, I credit the success to God. I pray every day and try to make the right decisions. Second, I credit associating with good people and companies over the years. We have worked hard to gain respect in this industry.
It's well-known that you have a strong relationship with Doug Roll of Roll Design. Tell us how you two joined up.I met Doug in the mid-'80s while racing various events. He always had a huge family presence at the races to cheer him on and help him out. I remember being jealous, as I had no one to attend the races with me. I totally admired that family atmosphere. It wasn't until '97 that we really became close friends. We have become like brothers over the years.
Over the past several years, more and more products have come with the IMS/Roll logo. What is this relationship about?IMS Products and Roll Design are separate entities and will continue to produce their own products. Doug and I have partnered to develop a new accessory line of performance bolt-on parts that carry the name IMS/Roll.
Who comes up with these product ideas and develops them?Doug and I usually sit down over Mexican food to brainstorm and discuss our ideas. Once we agree on what we want to do, our shops work together to develop the products.
What products does IMS/Roll currently offer? We have a great product line that complements both companies. We are currently producing heel guards, steering stems, shifter levers, brake levers, footpegs and bumpers, and the list will continue to grow.
What do you see as the future of IMS and the IMS/Roll product line?We see our future being in the IMS/Roll accessories. IMS will continue to develop and produce gas tanks and footpegs among other items, such as our new Custom Classic bumper series.
