Bling a Few Things: Newsom mounted up a set of the new Maxxis iRazr radial tires on Douglas Ultimate Billet Shamrock beadlock wheels. The new radials would give an advantage by offering a smoother ride and strong bite. After hours of stress on the tires, the Douglas beadlocks would play a major role in keeping the rubber from dismounting from the wheel. An oversize IMS fuel tank would limit the pit stops to a minimum while adding the ability to see how much fuel is in the tank while riding. To protect all of the new components and the motor, AC Racing skids, an IMS bumper and Cycra Pro Bend hand guards were installed.
To top things off, Team Adapt Racing added a little bling to this thing. Maier Manufacturing produces Bill Ballance signature-series plastic for the YFZ. This plastic not only looks trick but also protects the rider from the splash of mud and water with its widened fenders. One thing Team Adapt is all about is showing up and looking good. It stickered up this new-formed beast with its YFZ450 Tribal Flame graphics kit and seat cover to sweeten its looks.
Ride TimeI was able to convince Newsom to let me take a quick ride to check out the newly built 12-hour quad on a nearby woods loop that resembled the 12 Hours of ATV America course. As I mounted up on this monster, I immediately noticed how comfortable it felt. This is very important in long endurance-type racing. I was also very pleased with the smoothness of the motor and the horsepower it was putting to the ground. It felt extremely strong yet did not want to run away from me. The quad handled like a dream through the whooped-out loop, hugged fast corners as if it were on rails and jumped with a great deal of ease on motocrosslike sections.
"We are extremely confident in this quad's ability and cannot wait to put it to the test," Newsom said. The Team Adapt 12-hour YFZ gets my stamp of approval, and I will be watching to see the outcome. Team Adapt and crew plan to test the quad at a few GNCCs to get it dialed in and ready for the 12-hour race.
