Track logs record your exact route. They draw a line on the GPS screen showing where you've been. This is ideal for retracing your tracks as you will see on the GPS screen if you recross your path.
When traveling cross-country, I prefer to use waypoints to mark significant spots on the journey and triangulation to keep track of my location. If you are particularly detail-oriented, you may also want to mark points on the map. When you get mixed up, you can check how far you are from lakes, streams or the waypoints you've marked.
You can also use detailed topo maps and overview maps to visualize your route and journey. This is a great way to get fired up about a trip and to get you out of the office and into the world.
So find a place you want to explore, order maps and start planning an adventure!
